Chub Frank Heads To Texas Buoyed By Encouraging Run At Deep South Speedway

 

BEAR LAKE, PA – Chub Frank is never satisfied with a sixth-place finish, but sometimes he’ll accept one as an encouraging run.

Such was the case last Friday night at Deep South Speedway in Loxley, Ala., where Chub’s sixth-place performance in the track’s 40-lap World of Outlaws Late Model Series event helped him get back on track one month after a frustrating trip to Georgia and Florida.

“At least we were back to being competitive,” said Chub, who opened the WoO LMS season last month with finishes of ninth and 24th at Florida’s Volusia Speedway Park. “We made some changes after struggling so much last month and I think we’re headed in the right direction.”

Chub began Friday night’s first-ever WoO LMS program at the high-banked, four-tenths-mile oval by recording the fourth-fastest lap in time trials. He won the fourth heat race, but picking the seventh starting spot for the A-Main in the draw likely doomed Chub and his Corry Rubber, Lake Shore Paving, Hino Toyota, All-Star Performance, Corry Laser, Slavic Corporation, Custom Race Engines, GW Performance Chevrolet Impala SS Rocket Chassis No. 1*. With passing was at a premium in the feature, Chub managed to improve just one position before the checkered flag was thrown.

“The track was just too fast,” said Chub. “It needed to slow down so you could move around on it and pass. The way it was, you needed somebody to bobble to get past them.”

Chub did engage in a hot duel with defending WoO LMS champion Darrell Lanigan early in the A-Main. The two drivers touched on lap 10 and swapped paint a couple more times before Chub pulled away.

“He thought he had me clear (entering turn three), but he hit me in the door,” Chub said of his battle with Lanigan. “It about crashed us both. I thought for a second that I was going right in the wall, but I held on.

“I was mad at the time and we’ll talk about it, but I know he didn’t mean it. He doesn’t drive like that.”

Saturday night’s scheduled 60-lap, $12,000-to-win WoO LMS event at Deep South Speedway was canceled after steady rain arrived along the Gulf Coast late in the afternoon. Track and WoO LMS officials have not determined if there is a suitable d ate for the tour to return to the track later in the season.

Following the rainout Chub headed west for Texas, where the WoO LMS will contest the inaugural Lone Star 100 this weekend (March 20-21) at Battleground Speedway outside Houston. The tour’s first visit to Texas since 2004 will feature a $20,000-to-win A-Main.

Chub currently sits seventh in the WoO LMS points standings, 70 points behind leader Steve Francis.
