UPPER IOWA SPEEDWAY FALL CLASSIC 9.15.07
BY DWIGHT JONES
Decorah’s Upper Iowa Speedway hosted its annual Fall Classic this past Saturday night. B-Mods and Stock Cars were running for a nice big check - $700 to win for each, and the other three classes including USRA Hobby Stocks, Outlaw Hobby Stocks and Hornets were running for some hefty winnings as well. A nice crowd was on hand and though there was definitely a hint of fall in the air, a jacket was plenty good enough as drivers took to the Decorah oval for the last time this season. A review of the Classic includes -
Fisk’s Farm and Home Hornets – Justin Lewis has been tough as nails the second half of this season, and starting up front looked as though he might claim yet another trophy for the ol’ trophy case, but Steve Dwyer, who hasn’t ran every week, but every week he has seemed to always be out front, moved out front yet again and never looked back. Lewis would hold off Happel for second, but the lead was all Dwyer’s who claimed his seventh feature win of the year in just thirteen starts.
Sunoco Racing Fuel USRA Hobby Stocks – Scott Fjelstul’s night went front good to bad at the start of the Hobby Stock feature as he spun in corner two while leading. Several other cars had to scramble to avoid their own mayhem, including Brandon Hare who nearly rolled, getting up on two wheels but regaining control in the nick of time. Jesse Holzer would battle out front following the re-start. A scary incident occurred when Doug Lind rolled in corner four, destroying his #46. As mentioned earlier, Hare recovered from the early incident, much to Holzer’s chagrin as Hare moved to the lead. Kyle Anderson powered to second and would give Hare all he wanted, getting alongside the leader a few times but was unable to clear him. Mitch Hovden dusted off his old Hobby Stock car for the night and moved to third, but the lead was Hare’s who claimed his third feature win of the year.
Sim’s TV and Electronics USRA Outlaw Hobby Stocks – coming in to the night’s events, point champ Mitch Hovden and runner-up Dillon Anderson had won 10 of the season’s 16 feature events, and in a majority of those races, they both finished in the top two. This time around, it was Anderson who quickly moved to the lead and Hovden that was going to have to play catch up. Anderson led through most of the event, but a late caution gave Hovden hope. The two would battle in the closing laps as they’ve seemingly done all year but this time around Hovden would have to settle for the role of bride’s maid as Anderson claimed his third feature win of the year. Josh Ludeking and Danny Cole, Jr. had a great battle for third with Ludeking edging the #00 at the line.
Bill’s Auto Repair USRA B-Mods – Matt Cahoon is not a regular competitor at Decorah’s UIS but appeared very comfortable early on the B-Mod feature, out front leading the pack. 2006 point champ Junior Boyer moved his #42 out front for awhile as well, but a spun in corner two ended his bid for his third feature win. But if you’ve followed UIS this year, you know that the B-Mod division has been dominated by Matt Jones, and the point champ found his way to the front yet again. Jimmy Broszeit recovered from an early trip to the pits to second, but the lead was all Jones’ who finished the year the same way he started it – taking home the winner’s check and trophy, his eleventh UIS feature win of the year.
Decorah Chiropractic USRA Stock Cars – Tony Trower started out front in the Stock Car feature but like others had done earlier, he spun in corner two while leading. Bryan Webb then moved his #10 to the lead and would hold on until the halfway point when 2007 point champ Dan Jones had his #25 wound up running the high side and shot to the front. Kurt Krauskopf and Jones have had some great battles throughout the entire season, and Krauskopf was finding a lot of bite on the low side as he powered past Jones for the lead, but Jones returned the favor, moving to the bottom and making the pass back to the lead. The two would run nose to tail through the remainder of the event but Krauskopf would have to settle for second as Jones topped off a fantastic ’07 season with his sixth feature win of the year.
