WORLD Dirt Racing League
Davenport, Iowa (Oct. 7, 2007) -- Darren "The Thriller" Miller made it two
for two in the WORLD Dirt Racing League Polydome Late Model Series by
grabbing his second win in as many nights Saturday here at Davenport
Speedway.
But Justin Fegers of Mound, Minn., officially became the 2007 WDRL PolyDome
Late Model Series champion when he took the green for the 50-lap feature,
the series' season finale.
Miller held off 2007 WDRL Rookie of the Year John Kaanta for the race win,
coming to the green flag in the sixth starting position.
By lap four, Miller had taken the lead, and he was able to work through
lapped traffic while holding Kaanta and early race favorite Fegers at bay.
As lapped traffic became thicker, Kaanta was able to close in on Miller. But
a yellow flag would fly again, giving Miller a clean race track to work with
on the restart.
"That late yellow (flag) helped us out a lot," Miller told the fans from
AMSOIL Victory Lane. "After the dash, I had my guys change just about
everything, and they thought I was crazy."
Kaanta chased Miller hard in the closing stages of the race on the historic
Davenport half-mile. Kaanta was looking to move up a position in the final
WDRL PolyDome Late Model Series point standings, and it was obvious he was
on a mission.
Kaanta, who had set fast time and started fifth in the 50-lapper, worked
hard to cut his way up to second, but he could not overtake Miller for the
win. In addition to winning the WDRL Rookie of the Year honors, Kaanta moved
into second place in the final points rundown.
Ray Guss Jr., substituting again for the injured Brian Harris in car Harris'
21H, finished third in the main event despite tangling with another car in
the race, causing some damage.
"I got into someone, and it messed something up with the right front," Guss
told the crowd after the checkers had flown. "I didn't see a car down low,
and when I tried to get out of the way, I ended up making contract with
another car."
Brian Birkhofer had a flat tire early in the race but marched his way back
to the front for a fourth-place finish. Jimmy Mars rounded out the top five.
Champion Justin Fegers and the rest of the top 10 in the WDRL PolyDome Late
Model Series point standings will be honored this coming Nov. 10 at the
WORLD Dirt Racing League¹s annual awards banquet. Details will be coming
soon to the WDRL Web site, www.worldraceleague.com.
