Swan, Lawver, Wilson, Gay and Sanberg Take 2006 Bracket Wins!
By: Kevin Ramsell

Sunday, October 15, 2006 (Loves Park, IL) – The 15th Annual Bahama Bracket Nationals at the Rockford Speedway concluded with four of the five winners choosing the money over a trip to the Bahamas. James Swan, Scott Lawver, Rick Wilson, and Chris Sanberg chose a trip to the bank, while Darrell Gay is off to the warm sunshine.

Swan, the 2006 Mid-American Series champion, held off two Hawkeye Downs Modifieds to win the “A” Bracket.

The 50-lap feature event started with 2006 Rockford Speedway American Short Tracker champion George Sparkman leading over Doug Bennett. Sparkman and Bennett would put on a great side-by-side battle for the top spot.

Swan, who started tenth, used the inside line to work his way to the front. Swan would take over the top spot on lap 23 when he went three wide on Bennett and Sparkman to take over the top spot.

Four laps later, Aric Becker and Chad Willett would get past Sparkman to take over second and third.

A scary wreck occurred on lap 25 when Shawn Wiltjer drove over the top of Dave Behnke’s right rear tire and found himself on the roof of his car. Wiltjer was able to walk away, but was done for the day.

The fans watched as Swan would hold off the two modifieds to the checkered flag. Willett would get by Becker to take second while 2004 winner John Paul Odegaard was fourth. 2005 winner Ricky Bilderback was fifth.

“We come out of Rockford and we have all of our body panels on the car,” an excited Swan said in victory lane. “I am going to take the trip to the bank. Everyone should come and do this.”

Lawver was the big winner in the “AA” Bracket as he held off Eddie Wolf for the win.

Mike Brandelino was the early leader in the 50-lap event. Brandelino had to hold off an early battle from Fred Nason for the top spot. Brandelino would hold on to the top spot until the halfway point.

After a caution, Bill Tuckwell would go in the middle of two three-wide battles and charge his way to the front on lap 28. Tuckwell would hold on to the lead until he got caught going faster than his break out time on lap 38. This allowed Lawver to take over the top spot.

Lawver started 15th and used his experience of racing at the high-banked quarter-mile oval to work his way to the front and hold off Wolf for the win.

“Home track does help,” a happy Lawver stated in victory lane.

James Marcanio would finish third with Nason and John Ventrello rounding out the top five.

Wilson started 18th and came through the field to win the “AAA” Bracket.

Mike Nelms had the early lead in this 50-lap feature event, but had to give it up on lap 10 when he broke out from his time. This handed the lead over to Alan Dorn.

Dorn held the lead for a few laps until Don Fassett got past him for the top spot. Then he gave up the lead to Rich “Woo” Lesauskis. Lesauskis would hold on to the lead until Jimmy Robinson got on the inside of him and took over the lead on lap 29.

Wilson made his way up to the front on lap 34 and challenged Robinson for the lead. Two laps later, he would take over the top spot and hold off Robinson all the way to the checkered flag.

“I got a big sandbox in my backyard, a great woman, and I can make margaritas at home,” Wilson stated when asked if the would take the money or the Bahamas trip. “I will take the money.”

Steve Prim would come home third. Randy Filling and Vaughn Lesko would round out the top five.

Darrell Gay made the most of the Bahama Bracket weekend as he took home his first ever feature in the “AAAA” Bracket.

Michael Gilomen was the early leader in an exciting 50-lap feature event.

Dennis Smith Jr. took his turn up front when he got past Gilomen on lap 23. That only lasted for six laps as Shawn McGann got past Smith for the top spot on lap 29.

But his lead only last for a lap as Steve Goar got by him on lap 30. That was until Gay moved from his 17th starting position to challenge for the lead on lap 35. He got on the inside of Goar and raced side-by-side until he was able to take over the top spot on lap 37.

Gay would go on to take the win and would be the second driver to take the trip to the Bahamas over the money.

Roger Schultz came home second with Smith in third. Goar would come home fourth with Ed Papineau rounding out the top five.

Sanberg was the winner of the Hornet Bracket feature.

It was a wild 50-lap feature event that saw a great battle between Nick Lasher and Sanberg.

Sanberg would take the lead for the first time on lap 13 when he got by Dustin Tucker for the top spot. He would hold on to the lead until Lasher got by him on lap 42.

Lasher had a wild race on his own as he brought out an early caution after losing a tire. He would come through the pack to take the lead. Lasher appeared to be on his way to the win until Sanberg made his move with two laps to go to take back the top spot.

Sanberg would pull away by two car lengths to take the win. “I have been to the Bahamas, it wasn’t a good trip, I’m taking the money,” Sanberg stated in victory lane.

Steve McBride came home third with Chet Hartley finishing fourth. Scott Falconer rounded out the top five.

It was a beautiful day for qualifying on Saturday as 153 cars tried to get the perfect time of 14.300 seconds without going over. Shorttracknews.com put up a $100 bonus to any driver who sets a qualifying time of 14.300 seconds.

Senerchia would pick up the bonus in Happy Half Hour qualifying as he set the fast time of the day of 14.300 seconds. John Paul Odegaard set a time of 14.301 seconds and Shawn Stinger in his Modified set a time of 14.302 seconds.

A total of 24 Hornets made the attempt to get close to their breakout time of 20.700 seconds on the Monza Course. Austin Falconer had the closest with a time of 20.735 seconds.

Next Sunday, it’s the final event for the 2006 season at the Rockford Speedway with the running of the Goblin 250 Enduro and demolition derby. The racing action will get underway at 1:00 p.m. Kids are invited to come out to the track prior to the racing action and participate in the Costume Contest at 12:30 p.m.
