DeFrance Wins KMAQ Maquoketa Dirt Classic

Beautiful weather smiled down on Jackson County Speedway Saturday for the running of the KMAQ Radio Maquoketa Dirt Classic and eighty-nine race cars showed up to race in four divisions of competition. Pole sitter, Hershel Roberts grabbed early control of the thirty-five lap Late Model feature with Rob Toland taking over on lap six. At lap twelve Davenport Dirt Classic winner, Matt Ryan moved out front. After a couple of minor cautions the big one came at lap sixteen involving six cars and sending five of them to the pits with damage to bad to continue. It appeared smoething broke on first heat winner, Terry Neal’s car as he was running third, sending him crossways across the track in front of twenty-two other cars. Neal and Roberts were among the racers retired at this point. On the restart Ryan took over where he had left off with Kevin Blum, Toland and Darrell DeFrance in hot pursuit. At lap twenty-seven DeFrance took the high side past second heat winner Ryan and held on to take the victory. Ryan held on for second with Blum taking third. Fred Remley moved in to take fourth with Dale Stolte bringing home fifth. Visiting Georgia driver, Mitch Current won the other heat.

The V8 Modified feature was also a thirty-five lap affair and had pole sitter, Brad Dierks take the early lead. After five laps of competition Dierks swung into the infield with mechanical woes and retired from the race turning the lead over to Mark Schulte. Schulte was not going to be denied the win as he led from there on with a real battle between four cars going on right behind him. Ryan Dolan took second with Marty Thompson third, Jim Sandusky fourth and Jeff Morris fifth. Heat race wins went to Mike Zemo Jr, Schulte, Morris and Tim Current. The two consi’s were won by Steve Johnson and Sandusky.

Nineteen of the twenty-one Street Stock cars on hand made the call for the start of the feature with Jamie Wilson taking the early lead. At the third caution in as many laps, Rick Brokus took over the point on the restart. Two more cautions quickly followed and then things settled down to racing. The races last caution flew at lap sixteen of this twenty lapper to tighten the field back up behind Brokus. Brokus took the lead on the restart but one lap later Mike Driscoll went by and on for the win. Brokus held on for second followe by Wayne Hora, Chip Kohl and Josh Wilson, in that order. The heat wins went to Josh Wilson, Shane Overbreckling and Ryan Steffen.

Chris Stein led the B Modified feature flag to flag to take the checkers, but had to worry about seven cautions before the mid race point keeping competition up behind him. Mark Winkel was second and it appered that Adam Kinion took third, but Kinion was found to light in post race inspection turning third over to Derrick Carlson. Jay Garvey was fourth with Todd Moore holding on for fifth.
