Neal nabs Deery Brothers Summer
Series win at Independence Motor Speedway
By Ryan Clark
INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (July 3) – Terry Neal topped a field of
49 I.M.C.A. late models to take home the victory in the Deery Brothers
Summer Series’ annual stop at Independence Motor Speedway.
Neal, who started outside the second row, worked his way under race
leader Rob Toland on the 27th lap to drive to the win in the caution-free
40-lapper.
Pole-sitter Jon Passick paced the field early as Curt Martin and
Toland battled side-by-side for second. Toland drove the bottom groove
around both of the leaders on the 12th circuit and started to pull
away from the field.
Neal, who was running fourth at the time, was able to close in on
the leader as Toland entered lapped traffic on lap 15. Neal worked
around Martin four laps later and set his sights on the leader.
By the 23rd circuit, Neal also worked his way through the back markers
and went to work at running down Toland. Just four laps later, Neal
put his No. 28C below Toland and motored to the front of the pack.
He led the final 13 laps to score the victory, lapping all but the
top eight finishers.
Toland ran second and Jeff Aikey, who started 12th, crossed the line
third. Martin finished fourth.
In modified action, J.D. Auringer took advantage of his outside front
row starting spot to take the early lead. Auringer led at the drop
of the green and quickly distanced himself from the field.
A number of cautions throughout the scheduled 20-lapper frequently
slowed the action. With three laps remaining, the field was realigned
for a final restart with Auringer out front, Max Corporon in second
and Troy Cordes in third.
Cordes used a swift move to the bottom of the 3/8-mile oval when
the green was displayed and quickly worked his way past Corporon.
Cordes reeled in Auringer as the field came around to pick up the
white flag, making a pass for the lead by inches at the line before
the races final caution was displayed.
Cordes was awarded the victory in the caution-shortened event with
19 of 20 laps complete. Auringer finished second and Corporon third.
Brian Irvine held off the persistent challenges of Damon Murty to
take the checkers in the 15-lap stock car main event. Irvine led the
entirety of the 15-lapper to score the win ahead of Murty and Jason
Goedken.
In B modifieds, Brian Kunkle continued his dominance at the speedway,
taking the 15-lap win. Kunkle took the lead on lap five and never
looked back to score the victory. Tony Olson, who led early, was forced
to restart the event from the tail of the field following a caution
on lap two. He masterfully worked his way through traffic to take
runner-up honors over Troy Burkhart.
