JENNINGS, DAINS POST FIRST
FEATURE WINS ON CASSILL MOTORS NIGHT AT HAWKEYE DOWNS SPEEDWAY
(Cedar Rapids, IA 06/04/2010)—Justin Jennings of LaGrange,
MO and Tim Dains of Marion both recorded their first feature wins
in their respective divisions on Cassill Motors Night at Cedar Rapids’
Hawkeye Downs Speedway.
Jennings, the 2009 Rookie of the Year in Performance Concepts Late
Models, won his first career feature while Dains, who has raced
in other divisions at Hawkeye Downs, took his first win in Coca-Cola
IMCA SportMods.
In Papa Johns Cup/I-Wireless Championship Series events Friday
night, Tim Plummer was the first feature winner of the night collecting
his third Performance Concepts Late Models win of 2010. The race
was a make-up event from an earlier rainout. Plummer started outside
row one and took the lead on lap six which he never relinquished
despite a couple cautions. The last caution came just as the field
was coming to the white flag when the second place car of Johnny
Spaw erupted in white smoke with apparent engine problems.
Plummer maintained the lead on the restart with Kyle Hinrichs making
a big move on the final lap as he went from fourth to second. Justin
Jennings finished third with Brad Dvorak and Ken Reiser filling
out the top five
Nathan Ballard continued his early season domination of the Barron
Motor Supply IMCA Hobby Stock division, taking the 15-lap feature
event. Duayne Herb and Matt Petrzelka appeared to be the cars to
beat in the early going but with four laps to go Ballard had moved
from 7th to 2nd and was set to challenge for the lead. He slid around
Herb and into the lead with two laps remaining and went on to collect
the checkers for the fourth time this season. Herb maintained second
while Jeremy Robbins moved into third on the final lap. Petrzelka
finished fourth and Roland Bohnsack brought home fifth.
Tim Plummer notched yet another win in Budweiser Modifieds Friday
night. Plummer took the point after a lap three restart and was
never heeded as he collected his fourth straight feature win. Larry
Clausen did gain some ground as the laps ticked off but Plummer
still crossed the finish line .726 seconds ahead of Clausen. Craig
Bender was third while Rodney Rocarek and Ryan Luedtke finished
out the order.
Jim Hanson racked up his second win of the 2010 campaign in Barron
Motor Supply IMCA Stocks Cars after taking the lead from David Ballstaedt
on lap six. Hanson continued to lead through lap 12 when Bob Ahrendsen
moved into the picture and in fact took a slight lead before caution
waved for a traffic cone that had been knocked onto the track. When
racing resumed Hanson was able to defend his position through the
final three laps forcing Ahrendsen, the current point leader, to
settle for second by just .081 seconds. Kurt Bohnsack finished third
while Ballstaedt was fourth and Cory Houdek was fifth.
Tim Dains outpaced the Coca-Cola IMCA SportMods after starting
on the point. Blake Carson and Scott Kositzky each took turns challenging
from the second position before Aric Becker locked down the number
two slot with five laps remaining. Becker couldn’t muster
a serious challenge for the point and Dains, a former Hawkeye Downs
Hobby Stock champion, scored fir first feature win since moving
to the SportMods. Becker maintained second with Kositzky and Blake
Carson close behind.
The first ten laps of the Sunline Hornets feature could only be
described as “wild and crazy” with multiple position
changes on each lap amongst the twenty-three car field. Most of
the action occurred behind leader Brad Burhite and then things settled
down a bit as caution waved on lap 11. Burhite, Bryce Bailey, Brad
Chandler, Dallas Chandler, and Derek Parrott were at the front of
the field on the restart with Bailey squeezing into the lead shortly
after the restart. The front-runners stayed status quo as the laps
ticked off with plenty of action on the quarter-mile behind the
leaders. Bailey scored his second-straight feature win crossing
the stripe just ahead of Dallas Chandler. Brad Chandler was third
followed by Brad Burhite and Derek Parrott.
The second Performance Concepts Late Model feature was a wild affair
that saw 5 lead changes among four different cars throughout the
race. Lane Brendan started on the pole and led the first 15 circuits
around the half-mile before points leader Tim Plummer used an outside
pass to secure the lead. The lead was short-lived however as three
laps later either a tire let go or another problem occurred that
send Plummer into the foam barrier in turn two, ending his night.
That put eventual race winner Justin Jennings into the lead for
the restart but his run to the checkers was interrupted by another
caution flag with four laps remaining.
Ken Reiser got an excellent restart and moved ahead of Jennings
as the field charged into turn one. Reiser continued to lead with
Jennings moving up to challenge and on the final lap Reiser got
a little high and into the marbles in turns three and four allowing
Jennings to regain the lead exiting turn four for the final time.
Brad Dvorak and Kyle Hinrichs both were able to motor under Reiser
as well, finishing second and third. Reiser recovered nicely to
finish fourth while Brad Osborn finished fifth.
Andy Duggan posted his fourth win of 2010 in Speed-e-Pan Sportsmen.
The field was scrambled on the first lap as caution waved for Doug
Simon and Ben Glascock. The restart put Dave McCalla, who is in
his first week back after suffering an accident earlier in the season,
on Duggan’s tail. While McCalla did gain some ground on Duggan
as the laps wound down, he was unable to draw close enough for a
challenge. Maccall settled for second with last weeks’ winner
travis Thompson third and Doug Simon, fourth.
There was racing of another sort as well Friday night as the Lil’
Racer Car Club hosted a series of bicycle races for various age
groups. The kids competed for prizes including trophies. Kids can
sign up for Lil’ Racer Car Club under the main grandstand
during regular race nights. There will be no Lil Racer Car Club
events during this Friday night’s ASA MWT Keith Fleck Miller
100 event.
Most of the Hawkeye Downs divisions have Friday night, June 11
off as the ASA Midwest Tour invades Hawkeye Downs for the 38th Annual
Keith Fleck Miller 100. The Sunline Hornets are running points races
in support of the event which features ASA Midwest Tour Late Models,
ASA Midwest Tour Sportsmen, and ASA Midwest Tour Trucks.
