JONATHAN EILEN BITES THE TRACK THAT BIT HIM AT HAWKEYE DOWNS SPEEDWAY WITH THE ASAMT IN THE MILLER 100

August 12, 2011 - Jonathan Eilen won the American Speed Association® Kwik Trip Midwest Tour presented by ECHO Outdoor Power Equipment and GrandStay Hospitality race at Hawkeye Downs Speedway in Cedar Rapids, IA tonight in the 39th Annual Miller 100 presented by McGrath Powersports.

Jonathan Eilen who had a season-ending wreck in turn two last year in this event came back and took home the victory! “I was so happy to be able to come back to this track and show that wall who is boss,” said an emotional Eilen from victory lane.

Nathan Haseleu took the lead in the early running and as the field got a little crossed up, Ross Kenseth lost about 10 positions. Tim Schendel did not waste anytime running Haseleu down for the lead as the field began to spread out into single file. Haseleu was able to begin to stretch out his lead as the first 10 laps fell into place.

Third through sixth were nose to tail for the first 15 laps as fast qualifier, Chris Weinkauf, Michael Bilderback, Chris Wimmer and Travis Sauter were fighting for the position.

Nathan Haseleu stretched out his lead by about 10 car-lengths by lap 20 over Tim Schendel. Travis Sauter took over the fourth spot on lap 25 and started the hunt on Chris Weinkauf. He looked to the inside and made the pass two laps later.

The field began to even out around lap 30 as Nathan Haseleu led the way. Haseleu ad Schendel had a full straight-away lead over third place, Travis Sauter on lap 40.

Ross Kenseth was having a rough go of his day and went one lap down on lap 40. As Haseleu battled with traffic, it gave Schendel a chance to close in on him.

The race was caution free for the first half as Haseleu continued to lead over Schendel and Travis Sauter.

The caution flew as the #5 of Travis Sauter made contact with Joey Gase in turn two on lap 56. Several cars pulled off the track during the caution. Steve Carlson, Ross Kenseth, last week’s winner, Jeff Choquette, and the #12 of Nick Murgic were amongst those. They all made it back out on the track before the green flag fell.

At the restart Haseleu chose the bottom groove followed by Schendel. Jonathan Eilen went to the outside. Eilen’s spotter was on his game, keeping Eilen on the outside and out in front. Eilen immediately got racy on the outside of Haseleu and took the lead on lap 58.

“We held our own tonight. Eilen was just better when he was out in front of us, but it was an okay night,” said second-place finisher, Haseleu.

Haseleu kept Eilen within a couple car lengths as they pulled about 3/4’s of a straight-away ahead of Schendel and Andrew Morrissey. Morrissey took to the inside of Schendel with 25 to go as Jacob Goede was making his way to the inside of Weinkauf for fifth.

Eilen continued to lead with only 15 laps to go as the rest of the field remained strung out. The second caution of the night flew on lap 86 for debris. The field doubled up again for the restart. Eilen and Haseleu both restarted in the low groove.

With 10 to go, Eilen was two car-lengths ahead of Haseleu, Goede and Morrissey and that’s how it ended.
